The head of EU executive Ursula von der Leyen said the European Commission would propose a faster phase-out of Russia’s fossil fuel imports after a call with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
“They (European countries) mistakenly believe that the continued sanctions policy can somehow affect the position of the Russian Federation,” Peskov told reporters during a daily conference call.
“Russia, defending its national interests, has certainly not been affected by these sanctions, and has shown this eloquently over the past three years,” he added.
The Russian economy has shown resilience in the face of Western sanctions imposed over the Ukrainian conflict, but is also tackling sustained high inflation and rising budget deficits as a result of a sharp rise in military spending.
Despite sanctions, the EU is still importing billions of euros worth of Russian energy and goods, ranging from liquefied natural gas to concentrated uranium.
