On Friday, Rafael Grossi, executive director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held a telephone conversation with Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran.
During the call, both sides reviewed the latest status, snapback mechanisms and resolutions of the Iran-IAEA agreement to continue lifting sanctions at the UN Security Council.
The Iranian Foreign Minister criticized the political climate control over the recent meeting of the IAEA Board, stressing that cooperation with Iranian institutions is entirely technical and within the framework of international regulatory frameworks.
Araguchi also emphasized that as a responsible country, Iran has always pursued diplomatic and technical cooperation to address issues related to its nuclear programme, and has not embraced political action or unfair pressure that could escalate tensions.
The UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution later on Friday that would grant Iran ongoing sanctions relief in accordance with the JCPOA.
Nine members of the UN Security Council voted against the revitalization of a snapback mechanism aimed at reviving Iran’s sanctions, but only four members supported it, with two abstaining.
Given the mechanisms and procedures of the snapback process, no resolution has been adopted to continue lifting sanctions against Iran.
