The second year of the Israeli genocide over Gaza and the growing international pressure on the government will be announced through concrete action against the occupation.
Representatives of all UN member states in 193 are expected to speak at the general assembly, along with two observers. UN General Assembly President Annalena Bearbok stressed that by moving forward with the two states’ solutions, it could put pressure on them to halt attacks on Israel and grant access to humanitarian aid. She warned that blocking aid and targeting civilians is a clear violation of international law.
Since the declaration of the Palestinian state by Algeria’s Yaserarafat in 1988, 149 countries have officially recognized Palestine. Last July, the “Two-State Solutions” conference hosted by Saudi Arabia and France in New York reaffirmed the importance of moving forward with this process.
Europe leading the waves
European countries play a prominent role in this new wave of perception. France announced that it would officially acknowledge Palestine next Monday, following its previous commitment to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas under President Emmanuel Macron.
In the UK, Kiel Prime Minister Stage warned that Britain would recognize Palestine this month if Israel does not take serious measures to end Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. He also highlighted the need for an immediate ceasefire against Gaza and an uninterrupted UN aid.
Belgium and Portugal have similarly pledged to formally recognize Palestine during the New York session. Luxembourg, Malta and San Marino are also participating in the initiative, with the Luxembourg Prime Minister confirming that the announcement will be formalized at the UN General Assembly.
Global expansion beyond Europe
Support for Palestine’s perceptions is beyond Europe. Canada, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, informed Abbas of its intention to recognize Palestine during Parliament.
Australia and New Zealand also confirmed that they will be finalising their position in the event, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese explaining that it is necessary to advance the two states’ solution and end the war in Gaza.
Andorra likewise pledged to announce his recognition of Palestinians along with France and other supporters.
Legal and humanitarian meanings
This diplomatic wave appears in Israel’s continued military attacks on Gaza, which has been unconditionally supported by the United States since October 7, 2023. Palestinian Ministry of Health statistics report 65,000 deaths and more than 166,000 injuries.
Baerbock emphasized that the two state solutions are the only path to security on both sides.
Just before the world’s largest annual diplomatic event, 11 countries’ simultaneous recognition of Palestine represents a historic milestone in the Palestinian-Israel conflict. The move is expected to place political and legal pressure on Tel Aviv and its supporters, strengthening hope for justice and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
