At a meeting between Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Farzane Sadeg, and Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Shahin Mustafayev, both sides highlighted significant advances in economic transport cooperation over the past year.
Sadegu, who co-chairs the Joint Economic Committee, emphasized the expansion of transport and trade relations between the two countries. She said that after the Iranian president visited Azerbaijan, major advances have been achieved in facilitating the bank and launching direct flights between Tabriz and Baku.
Emphasizing the importance of north-south and east-west transport corridors, Sadegu said Iran aims to reach 15 million tonnes of freight transport per year in the north-south corridors. A trilateral meeting with Russia is scheduled for next month, and ongoing projects and agreements will be considered.
To address transportation and customs challenges, a joint working group will be established within a month and will be formalized at future trilateral meetings.
Regarding the infrastructure project, Sadeg pointed out that the Kalaleh-Aghband Border Bridge and terminal are on track and are expected to operate before the Persian New Year.
Other important areas of cooperation include joint oil block development, expansion of gas exchange agreements with Naktiban, and transport of Russian gas through Azerbaijan. Sadeg also highlighted plans to strengthen the power networks of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia.
The Iranian minister has announced that he will visit Shahid Rajaee port as the Azerbaijani delegation may sign a memorandum of cooperation. She also highlighted the final decision on the priority trade agreement. This could drive bilateral trade from $650 million to $1 billion a year.
Sadegh concluded by expressing his hopes for continued bilateral involvement, noting that these efforts will contribute to the inclusive growth and prosperity of both countries.
