World leaders will gather in New York City to attend the Annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) conference, where Israel’s war between Gaza and the Russia and the Ukrainian war is expected to dominate the debate.
Speaking to New York’s crammed world leaders on Monday, UN Prime Minister Antonio Guterres called for a ceasefire in Sudan, Ukraine and Gaza, describing the conflict as catastrophic global stability and human dignity.
“In Gaza, fear is approaching its third year,” he said. “These are the result of decisions that go against fundamental humanity. The scale of death and destruction exceeds the other conflicts of my year.”
The UN chief urged member states to uphold international law and implement binding measures by the International Court of Justice related to Israeli genocide in Gaza.
“The International Court of Justice has issued legally binding interim measures in a case that cited the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes of Genocide in the Gaza Strip,” Guterres said. “The measures set out by the ICJ must be implemented completely and immediately.”
His remarks came when the General Assembly was formally convened for the 80th session, and the perception of Gaza’s genocide and the Palestinian state was a key point in the speech.
