In a pre-agenda speech at Sunday’s open session, Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagh Galibahu condemned the activation of so-called “snapback mechanisms” and described the return of UN sanctions as illegal.
He stressed that Iran’s Islamic Republic is not aware of the implementation of snapbacks or reinvigorating sanctions resolutions, adding that Russia and China, as two permanent members of the UN Security Council, have explicitly stated in their official declaration that these measures are invalid and binding.
Gallibah pointed out that Iran does not comply with these illegal resolutions, including halting uranium enrichment, but it confirms that Iran’s right to enrichment remains recognized under international law.
He added that the sanctions outlined in these resolutions are insignificant compared to unilateral US sanctions.
The speaker emphasized that enactment of these resolutions faces serious legal obstacles for the United Nations, due to the invocation of a snapback mechanism and the illegality of Russia and China’s opposition.
Gallibach warned that if they act against Iran under these illegal resolutions, Tehran will retaliate with decisive mutual measures, adding that the three European countries behind the illegal move will also face an Iranian response.
