In an interview with Tasnim News Agency, Ebrahim Rezai has proposed withdrawal from the NPT in response to the European Troika illegal activities that sparked a snapback mechanism for nuclear deals in 2015, with around 15 draft plans being submitted so far.
He made it clear that the committee has finalized one plan but has not yet been placed on the parliamentary agenda.
According to the proposed plan, he said, if the snapback mechanism is activated, the Iranian government will need to formally notify the IAEA committee of its withdrawal from the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
The spokesman emphasized that under current circumstances there is no reason for Iran to remain in the NPT. He argued that the NPT and IAEA laws require that Iran support the development of Iran’s nuclear industry and technology, but this support was not provided.
Although Iran has adhered to extensive testing to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, the IAEA has failed to fulfill its obligations, creating conditions that will be used as an excuse for an attack on Iran. “We don’t see any reason to continue as we don’t benefit from our NPT membership or our collaboration with the IAEA,” he said.
As head of the Supreme National Security Council, Iranian President Masuud Pezeshkian emphasized that Parliament is independent when it said Iran would not leave the NPT.
“A national consensus is needed to withdraw from the NPT. Representatives of the Iranian state are gathering in Parliament, not in the government, and the president cannot impose his views on Parliament,” he added.
