Ahead of an informal meeting of EU heads of state or government in Copenhagen, Sanchez is approaching Gaza and tackling growing concerns about the safety of a fleet, which is at a high risk of intercepting by Israeli forces.
“We need to remember that this would not have happened if the Israeli government had allowed the UNRWA (UN agency of Palestinian refugees) to distribute this humanitarian aid,” Sanchez told reporters.
He noted that Spain has deployed naval vessels to assist in the emergency and is coordinating closely with other countries involved in the mission.
“I’ve always told the Israeli government in the first minute. Logically, the people, those in the fleet would otherwise fully protect their diplomatic protection,” he said.
“I hope that Israel, in this case, Netanyahu government (Israel Prime Minister) Netanyahu government will not express or provide a threat to this fleet as they do not represent any danger or threat to Israel,” he added.
