Egypt’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement that Abdellatti discussed the situation in the region and positive developments regarding the Gaza ceasefire with Rubio in a telephone conversation.
The statement said the talks discussed arrangements for a Gaza summit to be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump.
“Resolving the Palestinian issue and achieving a two-state solution will ensure lasting peace, stability and security in the region,” Abdellatti said.
On Wednesday, President Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of a 20-point plan laid out on September 29 to bring a cease-fire to Gaza, release all Israeli prisoners held there in exchange for about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and gradually withdraw Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip.
The first phase of the agreement entered into force at noon local time (9pm Japan time) on Friday.
The second phase of the plan calls for the establishment of a new governing body in Gaza and the creation of a security force consisting of Palestinian and armed forces from Arab and Islamic countries.
Since October 2023, Israeli military attacks have killed nearly 67,200 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it uninhabitable.
