In an official meeting between Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Nabiyev, the two countries discussed the latest progress of joint projects in the framework of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
The meeting was also attended by Gilan Governor Hadi Hegshenas, and both sides emphasized the importance of expanding transport cooperation, especially in Gilan’s railway and port sectors.
Sadegh highlighted the capabilities of Anzali and Astara ports and noted that Iran has prioritized the launch of regular freight train services along the western route of the corridor and the introduction of fare discounts on transit routes.
Governor Heghshenas emphasized the strategic position of Gilan province, which connects Iran’s railway and port network to the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, and said the province is poised to become a logistics hub for northern Iran and an important link for regional trade.
He added that the completion of the Rasht-Astara Railway and the development of new infrastructure in the Anzali Free Zone will significantly increase transport volumes and advance the goals of the North-South Corridor.
At the end of the talks, the two sides agreed to establish a joint expert committee to address the challenges faced by Iranian convoys on the Azerbaijan border and strengthen cooperation in the ports and railway sectors.
