According to Tasnim news agency, the 151st IPU General Assembly will be held in Geneva from October 19th to 23rd.
On this occasion, all IPU statutory bodies will meet, including the Governing Council, the Standing Committee, the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Middle East Affairs, the Women’s Parliamentary Forum and the Young Parliamentary Forum.
The general discussion will focus on the overall theme of “defending humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis.”
Parliament is also expected to adopt a resolution on urgent matters and a targeted matter taken up by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights entitled “Recognizing and supporting victims of illegal intercountry adoption and taking measures to stop this practice”.
Against the backdrop of 120 ongoing conflicts around the world and 310 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, as documented by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), hundreds of parliamentarians will gather in Switzerland to push for parliamentary action to uphold international humanitarian law, protect the independence of relief operations and strengthen multilateral commitments.
Brunei Darussalam is welcomed as the 182nd member parliament of the IPU, which is expected to increase the universality of the organization. Several international organizations will also be recognized as permanent observers.
The General Assembly will announce the winners of the 2025 Cremer-Pasy Award, which honors parliamentarians who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in this year’s IPU theme of gender equality.
