The Indonesian government has denied entry visas to Israelis for the 53rd FIG Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, which opens on Sunday.
“The IOC’s principled position is very clear: all eligible athletes, teams and sports personnel must be able to participate in international sporting competitions and events without any discrimination from the host country, in accordance with the Olympic Charter and the fundamental principles of non-discrimination, autonomy and political neutrality that define the Olympic Movement,” the IOC statement said.
“It is therefore the direct responsibility of the host country, the organizer and the sporting bodies directly involved to ensure that this principle is fully respected and that all necessary guarantees are provided in advance by the relevant authorities of the host country.”
The IOC also insisted that IOC officials will discuss the situation with Indonesia at their next meeting.
“Sports should remain a safe space for athletes to realize their dreams, and athletes should not be held accountable for political decisions,” the statement added.
