According to the Tehran Disaster Reduction and Management Organization, the first monitoring and control meeting of the capital’s water resources management program was held to assess the current water situation in the capital and review the measures taken so far.
Seyed Ali Sharifi, the organization’s deputy for prevention and risk reduction, said Tehran is facing an exceptional water shortage situation, stressing that overcoming this situation requires strong coordination and determination among all responsible institutions. “All institutions must fulfill their commitments and take practical steps to minimize the impact of drought and ensure efficient water management,” he said.
Sharifi added that the Tehran Crisis Management Authority has worked with the Tehran Water and Sewerage Company to develop an implementation plan for water resources management. The plan, approved by the Tehran Capital Region Crisis Management Headquarters, outlines monitoring, updating and evaluating the performance of institutions based on defined roles and responsibilities.
He emphasized the need for continuous monitoring meetings and regular reporting by all relevant organizations. The water and wastewater company will oversee adjustments to prevent potential water stress in the city.
Key elements of the management program include improving the efficiency of water transmission and distribution networks, reducing leakage, managing reserves and demand, recharging groundwater resources, and promoting public awareness of responsible water consumption.
During the meeting, officials also discussed repairing and renovating water infrastructure, establishing local treatment facilities and water recycling systems, non-potable uses of treated wastewater, and curbing excessive groundwater extraction. The responsibilities of each agency were outlined across short, medium and long term phases.
