Ghalibabadi made the revelation in an interview with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Sunday, when he arrived in Kabul with his delegation, saying his visit was part of Tehran’s regional policy and in line with expanding bilateral cooperation.
A senior Iranian diplomat specifically focused on water, border and justice issues during his talks with Afghan ministers and officials, stressing the opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in these areas.
Iran and Afghanistan have long had tensions over water rights to the Helmand River, control of their shared border, and the issue of Afghans living in Iran illegally.
The Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan’s proxy government welcomed the Iranian delegation and emphasized the importance of high-level visits between the two neighboring countries.
Amir Khan Muttaqi expressed optimism that Iran and Afghanistan, which have a common history dating back to the distant past, will foster cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Later that day, Mr. Gharibabadi met and held talks with Mr. Shamsuddin Shariati, the person responsible for the supervision and implementation of laws and orders. The two leaders exchanged views on legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries.
During the talks, an agreement was reached on consular rights for Iranian nationals held in Afghan prisons, as well as on the transfer and extradition of prisoners.
