Maj. Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi spoke on Monday at the sixth session of the Scientific Committee of the Conference on “Basij, Development and Sustainable Security in Southeastern Iran”, underscoring the growing importance of Iran’s geopolitical position.
“The world today is engaged in a new form of competition known as corridor warfare, a competition defined by railways, sea routes and transport roads,” said Safavi, a former supreme commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
He pointed out that in this area, “countries with strategic geography and strong security will play a leading role.”
He added that the Corridor War “reflects the civilizational competition between East and West, and Iran, with its unique position connecting East and West, North and South, could function as a new axis of regional (power) balance.”
Iran’s special geographical location along the north-south and east-west international corridors linking West Asia with East Asia and Europe has provided the country with a unique transit point.
Iran’s western rail network connects Türkiye and Europe. In the northwest, to Azerbaijan. To the north are the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Russia. In the northeast, it extends to Turkmenistan, Central Asia, Russia, and China. Southeast to Pakistan. and south to the Persian Gulf and the world’s open seas.
