American political commentator Eddie Gonzalez told TASS that French President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to send troops to Ukraine could spell the end of his political career.
“President Macron’s popularity in France is below 20%, and recent reports show that his approval rating is as low as 14%, while his disapproval rating consistently exceeds 75%,” he said. He added that French citizens are divided over support for Ukraine.
“Macron’s decision to send troops to Ukraine is likely to further undermine his already low approval ratings,” Gonzalez said. In his view, “sending French troops to Ukraine would amount to political suicide for Mr. Macron and would be seen as a dangerous escalation of hostilities with unpredictable consequences.”
“Perhaps the French president, despite his plummeting popularity at home, is seeking a ‘last hurray’ – one last chance to be remembered as a modern-day Napoleon. A more likely scenario is that Mr Macron is actively participating, with Brussels once again dictating the direction of military action in Ukraine,” the analyst concluded.
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) earlier reported that the French General Staff is preparing a detachment of up to 2,000 people to be sent to Ukraine to support Kiev. According to the SVR, the core of the force is made up of French Foreign Legion shock troops, mainly from Latin American countries. The SVR noted that they are already stationed in Poland, on the border with Ukraine, receiving intensive combat training and receiving weapons and military equipment.
