President Donald Trump said he had reached an agreement with China after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, the final day of a trip to Asia that gave the leaders of the world’s two largest economies an opportunity to stabilize relations after months of turmoil over trade issues.
The president told reporters on an Air Force plane that the United States would reduce tariffs imposed earlier this year to punish China for sales of chemicals used to make fentanyl from 20% to 10%. This will reduce the total tariff rate for China from 57% to 47%.
“On a scale of 0 to 10, I think this meeting was a 12,” President Trump said on Air Force One after returning to Washington after spending five days in three Asian countries. Their meeting lasted an hour and 40 minutes.
The report added that President Trump’s aggressive tariff enforcement since returning to the White House for a second term, coupled with China’s retaliatory restrictions on exports of rare earth elements, gave the meeting new urgency.
