Mr. Li and Mr. Xi are scheduled to hold their first summit on Saturday in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
According to Yonhap News, South Korea’s presidential office said denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is on the agenda.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Park Myung-ho criticized South Korea for trying to raise the issue of denuclearization at every opportunity.
In a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency, President Park said, “We will patiently demonstrate that denuclearization is a ‘dream story’ that will never be realized no matter how many times we talk about it.”
He said South Korea still does not realize that “struggles to deny North Korea’s status as a nuclear power or to talk about fantasies of achieving denuclearization only exposes South Korea’s lack of common sense.”
DPRK is an acronym for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the official name of North Korea.
North Korea is believed to be protesting South Korea’s presidential office’s announcement on the denuclearization agenda, and appears to be expressing its displeasure with China over the issue ahead of the summit between Ri and Xi.
Last May, North Korea criticized South Korea for expressing its determination to denuclearize the peninsula in a joint declaration following the trilateral summit meeting between South Korea, China, and Japan. North Korea rejected this as “reckless interference” in North Korea’s internal affairs. ”
