At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Zakani expressed his hope that the meeting will pave the way for further cooperation between the two countries, especially between Tehran, Madrid and Barcelona. He noted that these major cities have broad partnership capabilities that can be shared and developed.
The mayor explained Tehran’s urban management model, saying that the city administration aims to govern with citizen participation and promote sustainable development throughout the capital.
Zakani added: “The Islamic Republic of Iran does not look at all European countries with the same eyes. Naturally, we do not trust countries such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom, which have hostile policies towards us, but we are keen to expand cooperation with other countries, including Spain.”
Ambassador Sánchez Benedito Gaspar underlined the long-standing and respectful relationship between Spain and Iran. “Even during the difficulties faced by Iran last year, the Spanish embassy in Tehran remained open and active while some European countries closed their embassies. We are ready to dialogue with Iran in times of crisis and in times of peace,” he said.
The Ambassador added that since the beginning of his mission in Tehran, he has been engaged in constructive engagement with various Iranian institutions in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the meeting with the mayor was also included in this framework.
The Spanish envoy highlighted opportunities for urban cooperation and technical cooperation, saying: “Valuable efforts can be achieved through exchanges between Tehran, Madrid and Barcelona. On behalf of the Spanish Government, I express our readiness to promote joint projects.”
Citing Tehran’s priorities in developing public transport, Gaspar said that reputable Spanish companies such as Citron, which specializes in subway tunnel construction, could contribute to a possible joint venture.
He reaffirmed Spain’s interest in promoting cooperation between Spanish companies and the city of Tehran.
