In a telephone conversation, the Iranian and Russian foreign ministers welcomed the agreement reached between Kabul and Islamabad on a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border area, brokered by the governments of Qatar and Turkey.
Mr. Aragushi and Mr. Lavrov also discussed the developments in the situation in the Middle East, particularly in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, the raising and follow-up of the issue in the United Nations Security Council, and the status of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Council.
Aragushi called for continued consultations between the two countries and with other countries in the region to find ways to achieve peace and stability, according to a call read out by Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
Iran’s top diplomat also referred to the actions of the United States and European countries in the United Nations Security Council regarding Palestine and the drafting of a resolution leading to the establishment of an international protectorate for the people of Gaza and Palestine, saying that such a plan would be hopeless as it contradicts the principles of independence and self-determination of the Palestinian people.
Foreign Minister Lavrov welcomed the call and declared Moscow’s readiness to continue bilateral and regional talks. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation among regional countries to maintain collective security.
The two sides also exchanged views on cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), referred to the upcoming IAEA Council meeting, and emphasized the continued coordination and cooperation between Tehran, Moscow and China in this regard.
