Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei warned that increased American military activity in the Caribbean and Latin America could have dangerous consequences for international peace and security, and called for respect for Venezuela’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He said the threat to use force against the legitimate and elected government of Venezuela is a blatant violation of international law and a serious violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter, in particular the right to self-determination of States and the prohibition on the use of force under Article 2, paragraph 4.
The spokesperson cited multiple international reports characterizing attacks on US fishing boats as arbitrary and extrajudicial killings and stressed the need to stop the use of “counter-narcotics operations” as a pretext to violate Venezuela’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also reminded the United Nations and the Secretary-General of their responsibility to prevent violations of international peace and security and to counter the promotion of aggressive unilateralism at the global level.
