The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Friday that Israeli forces had built a wall in southern Lebanon near the United Nations Blue Line, the de facto border.
President Joseph Aoun’s office said in a statement that he had instructed “to file an urgent complaint with the United Nations Security Council against Israel, which is building a concrete wall across the Blue Line and across Lebanon’s southern border.”
He asked that the complaint be “attached to a report issued by the United Nations that refutes Israel’s denial of building a wall.”
According to UNIFIL, peacekeepers last month inspected a concrete T-wall constructed by the Israeli military southwest of Yarloun and found that it “crosses the Blue Line, making more than 4,000 square meters of Lebanese territory inaccessible to Lebanese nationals.”
A UNIFIL statement said a study this month into the additional construction found that “parts of the south-eastern wall of Yaroun also cross the Blue Line,” adding that this was a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty.
The military said it had informed the Israeli military of the October findings and asked them to move the wall.
