The US-drafted resolution passed on Monday by a vote of 13-0, paving the way for an important next step towards the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Mehr news agency reported. Russia and China abstained from voting.
Arab and other Muslim countries have expressed interest in contributing troops to the international force, and have previously indicated that a UN mission is essential to their participation. At their request, the United States included clearer language on Palestinian self-determination in the draft in order to get it across the finish line.
The draft law states that with reforms by the Palestinian Authority, which currently has limited autonomy in the occupied West Bank, and progress on Gaza redevelopment, “the conditions may finally be in place for a credible path to Palestinian self-determination and statehood.”

Despite a ceasefire that went into effect on October 10, Israel continues to carry out deadly attacks in the Gaza Strip on an almost daily basis and has limited humanitarian aid.
Israel’s brutal attacks have killed more than 69,000 Palestinians in what major rights groups have described as genocide.
