The current safeguards issue is a direct result of the US and Israeli attacks on Iranian facilities under safeguards, Iran’s special envoy to the IAEA Reza Najafi in Vienna said on Thursday, after the Council passed an anti-Iranian resolution drafted by the US, UK, France and Germany.
The diplomat said the suspension of some verification activities and the withdrawal of inspectors was a result of the security situation after the June attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities by the Israeli regime and the US military.
He noted that despite the invasion, Iran is cooperating and allowing inspections to resume.
Iran has granted all requests by government agencies for access to facilities unaffected by the attack, he continued, and inspectors have full access to non-bombed locations.
Najafi went on to say that the new resolution passed on Thursday aims to exert undue pressure and create a false narrative about the current situation in Iran and the IAEA’s cooperation.
He said one of the aggressors, the United States, was one of the countries that drafted the resolution with the intention of escaping responsibility for June’s illegal airstrike.
The Iranian envoy also said that with Thursday’s resolution, Western countries also sought to make up for the failure of illegal actions that led to the lifting of sanctions against Iran in October.
Mr. Najafi further emphasized that the drafters of the resolution had chosen the wrong path of relying on pressure and intimidation, and that this approach was unacceptable to Iran.
