An agreement signed between six countries to develop rail transport along the China-Europe Southern Corridor presented the Islamic Republic of Iran as a golden gateway for transporting 60 million tons of goods from China to Europe by rail.
Representatives from six countries, including Iran, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey, signed an agreement in Istanbul to develop rail transport of freight along the southern branch of the vital China-Europe Corridor.
Under the agreement, Iran was designated as the golden gateway for container trains destined for Europe from China.
In this six-party agreement, countries along the corridor pledged to pave the way to significantly increase container train traffic through the southern branch of the corridor through Iranian territory by determining equal and competitive fares, reducing train travel times, reducing customs costs, and providing the necessary infrastructure.
According to available information, about 60 million tons of products of various types were transported between China and Europe last year (2024).
The implementation of these agreements is expected to allow a significant portion of rail traffic to pass through Iranian territory, bringing significant trade and economic benefits to the country.
