Daily newspaper Dawn reported that the attack on the Federal Police Headquarters (FC) occurred early on Monday morning, with one of the militants detonating an explosive at the gate of the complex.
The remaining two people tried to force their way in, but were shot dead.
“Initially, three militants tried to attack the headquarters,” Mian Saeed Ahmad, head of the Peshawar Metropolitan Police, told the newspaper, Al Jazeera reported.
“One bomber detonated himself at the gate and two others tried to enter the compound but were shot at by FC personnel,” it added.
The website Duniya News also quoted Saeed as saying that the three slain FC officers were stationed at the gate and were killed in an explosion there.
Meanwhile, Peshawar Police Chief Syed Ahmad told the Associated Press that a large number of security personnel were in an open area inside the headquarters for a morning parade drill when the attack occurred.
“Although the terrorists involved in today’s attack were unable to reach the parade area on foot, a greater tragedy was averted due to the timely response of our military.”
The force’s headquarters are in the densely populated area of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtankhwa province. A security official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the area was under lockdown.
