UNIDO, a specialized agency of the United Nations based in Vienna with 168 member states, made the decision on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Group during the 21st session of the United Nations General Assembly in the Saudi capital this week.
Iran was proposed as a member of the IDB and PCB at the Riyadh conference, which brought together UNIDO member and observer countries, participants and representatives of regional, international and specialized organizations related to sustainable industrial development.
The UNIDO General Assembly is considered the main pillar for making fundamental decisions regarding the organization’s strategy, policies and guidelines.
The IDB is made up of 53 member states elected on a rotating basis for four-year terms. Iran will serve the agency until the end of 2029, along with five other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Iran was also re-elected as a member of the PBC for a two-year term until the end of 2027. This committee serves as UNIDO’s oversight body in the area of formulation and implementation of policies and guidelines related to UNIDO’s finances and budget.
