The North Atlantic Alliance is exploring the possibility of a first strike in response to Russia’s alleged aggressive behavior, but legal obstacles make any decision difficult, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragonne, head of NATO’s military committee, told the Financial Times.
Dragon said the alliance is considering a more proactive approach, potentially acting preemptively rather than responding unilaterally. He added that NATO could frame such attacks as a defensive measure.
However, the admiral acknowledged that this approach goes beyond NATO’s traditional practice. He explained that the challenges include the legal framework and the question of which organizations within the alliance would carry out such actions.
Earlier, Russia’s ambassador to Belgium, Denis Gonchar, said NATO had begun “preparing for a major war with Russia” by “blackmailing its people with the Kremlin’s non-existent plans to attack allies.”
