The two-day exercise begins tomorrow and will take place in the Persian Gulf, the Trio Islands (Lesser Tunbu, Greater Tunbu and Abu Musa), the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
Mohammad Nazeri was born in Tehran in 1954 and was a senior commander of the Revolutionary Guards Navy and one of the founders of its special forces. He is known for his maritime and special operations expertise and played a central role in training the Navy’s elite special forces for decades.
Mr. Nazeri was widely known in Iran for his key involvement in the January 12, 2016 operation that resulted in the capture of 10 U.S. Navy personnel after the ship entered Iranian territorial waters.
He died of cardiac arrest on May 10, 2016, although some reports link his death to long-term complications from chemical wounds sustained during the Iran-Iraq War.
His leadership in this operation is widely recognized in Iran, and future training will be held in his honor.
