Hamas and Islamic Jihad announced late Wednesday afternoon that they had handed over the body to the Red Cross.
The Palestinian resistance did not reveal the identities of the prisoners handed over on Wednesday, according to the Times of Israel.
If the remains are confirmed to be those of prisoners of war, it would mean that one prisoner’s body is still being held in Gaza. Ran Gviri, or Sudisak Rintarak, a Thai national, the Times added.
The transfers come under the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement, which came into force on October 10 and halts the Israeli regime’s two-year war that has killed more than 70,000 Palestinians and injured more than 171,000 since October 2023, Anadolu Agnesy said.
Hamas official Hussam Badran on Sunday accused Israel of using the remains issue as an “excuse to avoid fulfilling its obligations” under the ceasefire agreement.
The Israeli regime has linked the start of negotiations for the second phase of the cease-fire agreement to the receipt of the bodies of all prisoners of war. Hamas claims the remains of two Israeli prisoners are still in Gaza, but Hamas says it has handed over the remains of all 20 surviving Israeli prisoners and all 28 killed.
Meanwhile, 9,500 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces are still missing, their bodies remaining under the rubble, according to the Gaza government media office.
