A spokesperson for Afghanistan’s interim government claimed that Pakistan had attacked Kandahar.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for Afghanistan’s transitional government, claimed that Pakistan had once again attacked Afghan territory, Al-Mayadeen news agency reported.
He further said that Afghan forces had succeeded in repelling Pakistani attacks on certain areas of Kandahar.
Two days ago, Reuters reported that the Taliban and Pakistan held new peace talks in Saudi Arabia and agreed to maintain a ceasefire. The move is seen as the latest effort to ease tensions between the two South Asian neighbors.
A senior Afghan interim government official said negotiations were initiated by Saudi Arabia, adding that the Afghan side was open to further talks in pursuit of a positive outcome.
A ceasefire was reached in recent weeks following negotiations sponsored by Qatar and Turkey after deadly border clashes in October, but the two countries have yet to reach a comprehensive peace agreement.
