In an interview with the UAE-based IMI Media Group published in Friday’s National newspaper, Barrack said that since 1946, the United States has led some 93 coups or “regime change” attempts around the world, including two in Iran, none of which have been successful.
“(Trump) is responsible for regime change because there have already been two regime changes in Iran, and neither of them went well, so I think it’s wise to leave the solution to the region,” said Barrack, who is also the U.S. ambassador to Turkey.
The remarks came six months after the United States joined Israel in bombing Iran amid indirect nuclear talks between Iran and Washington.
Israel launched an illegal invasion of Iran on June 13, killing at least 1,064 people and targeting civilian infrastructure.
More than a week later, the United States targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities (Fordou, Natanz, and Isfahan) in serious violation of international law.
On June 24, Iran managed to halt its criminal violence after a series of successful retaliatory operations.
Barrack also claimed that US President Donald Trump and Foreign Secretary Marco Rubio are “not interested in regime change” and want a “regional solution” among regional actors.
He acknowledged that regional dialogue and non-interference by outside powers offer a more sustainable path forward.
He maintained that Washington remains open to reaching an agreement with Tehran if Iranian authorities demonstrate “seriousness” and a commitment to constructive dialogue.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with Japan’s Kyodo News Agency on Saturday that the United States has not yet indicated a readiness for “real serious negotiations.”
Negotiations could move forward if the United States recognizes Iran’s right to a peaceful nuclear energy program and lifts unilateral sanctions it has imposed on the country, he said.
