Iran has released new details in the Israeli spying case whose trial has officially begun at the Islamic Revolutionary Court’s Second Branch in Karaj. The defendant, a dual Iranian citizen living in a European country, was identified and arrested by the Alborz Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Service on the fourth day of the 12-day war, said Hossein Fazeli Harikandi, head of the Alborz cantonal Ministry of Justice.
Fazeli Harikandi said evidence collected in the investigation shows that the defendant met multiple times with Mossad agents and received training both in several European states and occupied territories. He added that the suspect entered Iran via the international airport to carry out his mission about a month before the 12-day war began.
During his arrest and subsequent search of the villa where he was staying, authorities reportedly discovered a variety of sophisticated espionage and intelligence-gathering equipment.
The judicial official said the case was being investigated under Article 6 of the Iranian Law Against Hostile Acts of the Zionist Regime against Peace and Security, on charges of “intelligence cooperation and espionage in support of the Zionist regime.”
On June 13, while Washington and Tehran were in the process of nuclear negotiations, Israel launched a blatant and unprovoked invasion of Iran. The Israeli attack sparked a 12-day war that left at least 1,064 people dead in the country, including military commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians.
The United States also entered the war by bombing three Iranian nuclear facilities in a serious violation of international law.
In response, Iranian forces targeted strategic locations throughout the occupied territories, as well as Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military base in West Asia.
On June 24, Iran successfully thwarted the invasion through successful retaliatory operations against both the Israeli regime and the United States.
