The South Americans are happy with their first win of the tournament, ending their losing streak at five, and are hoping to add another win in the ranking match on 29/30. They defeated Iran 27-16 on Monday.
The South American team relied on solid goaltending. Hummel’s best player, Agustina Moderner, stopped 15 balls with a saving efficiency of 54%, while Viviana Helgatakorzian, who replaced her midway through the second half, added six more saves. IHF.net reported that Uruguay scored 27 goals, the most in this tournament, with left-back Camila Bianco scoring five goals.
Uruguay took control of the match early on, taking a 5-1 lead and then 8-3. As in previous games, Iran struggled offensively, committing 21 turnovers in the entire game. The South American team steadily increased their lead and had a 16-8 advantage at the break, and although they lacked concentration in the second half, Iran had no chance of making a comeback.
In the previous World Championships, Spain 2021 and Denmark/Norway/Sweden 2023, Iran finished 31st. If they win Wednesday’s final match, the Asian side will be in the same position.
