The first flight is scheduled to take off this morning at 9am local time (6am GMT), Daily Sabah reported.
A plane takes off from Istanbul Airport and lands at Damascus International Airport. In addition to the passengers, Turkish Airlines executives will also be on board the first flight, according to local media reports.
THY CEO Bilal Ekshi announced earlier this month that the airline will operate three flights a week starting January 23.
“We are returning to Damascus,” Ekusi said in a post on social media platform X.
Direct flights between the two cities will operate from Istanbul Airport to Damascus International Airport at 9am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The return flight departs at 1pm on the same day.
The Demiroren News Agency (DHA) reported that many Syrians who were scheduled to fly to their homeland were seen holding flags and celebrating with songs at the airport.
