Iran has a natural gas reserved amount of 33 trillion meters or more, accounting for about 17 % of the world’s proven natural gas reserves. The annual production is 275 billion meters, and Iran is ranked as the third largest gas producer in the world.
Before the Islamic Revolution, the focus was mainly for oil extraction, and natural gas was considered by -product. As a result, many gas fields burned up due to lack of infrastructure, limited domestic gas networks, and many of the countries depended on liquid fuel.
Following the revolution, the development of the world’s largest South Pars gas field, which supplies more than 70 % of Iran’s gas consumption, has a great deal of gas production in line with the expansion of gas processing facilities for ILAM, Fajr Jam, and Hasheminejad. I raised it.
Iran’s current gas production capacity has exceeded 1 billion meters cubic meters, and 13 South Purgas Refinery is treated around 600 million cubic meters every day and is injected into grids nationwide. Currently, more than 70 % of the national energy mix is supplied by natural gas. Over the past 46 years, Iran’s gas industry has grown in an index and has positioned the country as an important player in the global energy market.
Some important factors in the Iranian gas industry are as follows:
20 Gas refinery
Iran mainly operates Southper (13 Refinery) and 20 active gas refinements in other areas. These facilities are important to purify and process natural gas for domestic consumption and exports.
1 Capacity of 1 BCM purified capacity
The extracted natural gas usually contains impurities such as water, sulfur compounds, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen bicarbon. Refining and dehydration are essential for its transmission and use.
Iran’s purification and dehydration capabilities reached 1,087 million cubic meters per day by expansion of facilities such as Southus, Fajil Jam, and Iram.
Gas pipeline over 40,000 km
Iran’s gas pipeline network has grown significantly in the past 46 years and has grown from 2,900 kilometers in 1979 to 40,223 kilometers by December 2024. These pipelines function as a major artery that transports natural gas from production sites to consumption centers nationwide.
94 Gas pressure boost station
The pressure boost station is essential for maintaining the gas pressure on the transmission line. The numbers increased to 94 from August 1979 to December 2024, and one station was entrusted by the 14th administration.
Gas distribution network over 461,000 km
Gas distribution networks in Iranian cities and rural areas are the world’s most wider area, growing from 2,050 km in 1979 to 461,907 kilometers by December 2024.
With this expansion, natural gas has been brought to millions of homes and industries.
32m gas supply unit
In addition to households, industries are the main consumers of natural gas, and power plants play an important role in power generation.
Public facilities such as schools, hospitals, mosques, and government agencies are also connected to gas network. The number of gas support units increased from 51,000 in 1979 to 32 million by December 2024.
29m urban and rural subscriber
The use of natural gas in cities and villages has greatly reduced fossil fuel consumption, reduced household costs, and contributed to environmental protection and social fairness.
The number of subscribers increased to 28.8 million from 47 in 1979 to December 2024.
Gas supply to 1,264 cities
Gas supply to the city has been a major development project since the 1980s. The number of gas -support cities has increased from 1,264 to 1,264 from September 1979 to December 2024, and 99 % of the national cities are now connected to natural gas networks.
Gas supply to more than 40,000 villages
Rural gas supply has been a priority in recent decades, aiming to provide clean energy, reduce liquid fuel consumption and improve public welfare. The number of villages supplied by gas has risen to 40,756 from February 1979 to December 2024, and is now connected 88 % of the village.
Increase in daily gas production of 33 mcm
Efforts to maximize and stabilize gas production have increased raw gas production by 33 million meters in the first five months of the 14th government.
Gas over 92 BCM consumed in the housing department
Especially in the cold season, the supply of housing gas is the priority. From the beginning of 2024 to December, 9.2 billion -cubic meters were allocated to housing, commercial, and non -large industrial sector.
Gas over 68 BCM assigned to a power plant last year
Power plants as a major power producer are largely dependent on natural gas. Power plant gas consumption increased from 1.5 billion cubic meters a year in 1979 to 68.4 billion meters per year from March 19, 2024.
46 BCM gas consumed by major industries
Major industries, including petrochemicals, oil stations, steel, and cement, are important gas consumers. Gas consumption in these industries reached 45.8 billion meters from March 20, 2024 to December 19, 2024.
Last year, 16.6 BCM gas was exported
Iran has expanded gas exports, reaching 16.6 billion meters in 2023, exporting 7.1 billion meters in the 14th government for the first five months.
800 mcm energy savings certificate issued
The Ministry of Oil has issued a 800 million cubic meter energy -saving certificate a month ending on December 19, 2024 to support the optimization projects such as renewable power plants, metro systems, and CNG vehicle conversion.
Development of natural gas storage capacity
The gas storage project is underway to balance production and consumption, increase supply stability, and meet peak demand.
Currently, six storage projects are in the development or exploration stage, plans to store 120 million cubic meters during the peak consumption period.
The Iranian gas industry has grown remarkably over the past 46 years, changing the country into a global energy power, significantly improving the quality of citizens’ lives.
