“It’s been through mediation and negotiations that I’ve done this in the past,” the diplomat said in an interview with Fox News. “And we were even during the first Trump administration working with the administration on getting an arrangement with Iran,” he added, saying Qatar could once again play this role.
Officials noted that Qatar is currently in the middle of 10 simultaneous mediation processes, including mediation between Hamas and Israel. “We hope to be able to contribute this to the US,” he added.
Previously, Trump signed a memorandum of understanding to restore maximum Iranian pressure. In particular, the document calls for strengthening Washington’s efforts to reduce Iran’s oil exports. However, Trump did not rule out a meeting with Iranian President Masudo Pezeshkian.
Following this, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araguchi said Trump’s fear of nuclear weapons was unfounded as Iran is strongly committed to the Non-Enhancement Treaty (NPT). He reiterated that there is a religious order from Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei banning the production of nuclear weapons.
Araguchi emphasized that another attempt to put maximum pressure on Tehran would fail just as bad as before.
