Tehran prosecutor General Ali Salehi announced that the suspect has been arrested in connection with the recent murder of a student at Tehran University, a shocking incident that sparked tensions on campus.
Amir Mohammad Karegi, an undergraduate student in the Department of Business Administration at Tehran University, was stabbed earlier this week and died of injuries several hours later.
In a statement on Saturday, Salehi expressed his sadness to Amir Mohammad Haregi’s family.
“We introduced the case to the special branch and the special murder investigation team shortly after the attorney ordered the matter to be carefully, seriously and promptly followed up,” he said.
“The suspect has been arrested in this regard, but the investigation is still underway as they are trying to arrest the perpetrator of the crime as soon as possible and punish him,” he added.
Salehi emphasized that the judicial system will undoubtedly treat this issue decisively, promptly and in accordance with the law, bringing the perpetrators to justice. “We are not tolerant of burglars and people who disrupt public order and security.”
Karegi, 19, was stabbed by two unknown assailants who stole his backpack outside his college dorm on Wednesday. After being rushed to Shariati Hospital, he passed away Thursday morning due to the severity of his injuries.
The incident sparked rage, with students gathering in Tehran University dormitories to seek more safety precautions and demanding justice from the victims.
The protesters also called for accountability to the university administrators over the incident. In response, university officials expressed sympathy and committed to addressing student concerns.
