Traceca is an international transport programme that includes the European Union and 12 member states in the Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia region.
The programme aims to strengthen economic ties, trade and transport in the Black Sea Basin, the South Caucasus and regions of Central Asia.
It has a permanent secretariat originally funded by the European Commission in Baku, Azerbaijan, and a regional office in Odesa, Ukraine. Since 2009, the organization has been fully funded by member states.
Traceca was established in May 1993 in Brussels and was established with the signing of a multilateral agreement on international transport on the development of transportation initiatives between EU member states, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asian countries (including the establishment and development of road corridors). The program supports the political and economic independence of the former Soviet Republic by enhancing access to European and global markets through roads, rail and seas.
Traceca’s purpose was highlighted by the Baku initiative in 2004, followed by further ministerial meetings in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2006.
Traceca has five working groups: marine transportation, airline, road and rail, transportation security and transportation infrastructure.
In July 2023, it was announced that Traceca would be participating in the ETIR International System.
