After reviewing images provided by Maxar Technologies, analysts said the new ship is currently characterized by a different design from the Chinese fleet, and could show a major change in the naval balance.
According to the report, China currently operates three aircraft carriers, with the latest addition being Fujian 003 Supercarrier. Fujian has three electromagnetic catapults designed to launch jets, but analysts believe Darian’s new image shows China is taking its career capabilities to the next level.
Michael Duttman, a researcher at James Martin’s Center for Non-Diffusion Research, told NBC News that satellite imagery suggests that China is preparing for a fourth-generation carrier, perhaps Type 004, with four catapults instead of the usual three.
By introducing four catapults, China can launch more jets at once, in line with the capabilities of the largest American airlines, such as USS Gerald R. Ford.
To accommodate this increased catapult, ships must be significantly larger than the Fujian faction, and require nuclear-powered reactors to suit the size and capabilities of US supercarriers.
