German authorities say at least one person was killed and several others were injured after the car drove to a pedestrian in Mannheim city.
Police spokesman Stephen Wilhelm told reporters that some of the injured were hospitalized in serious condition but could not provide accurate figures at this time.
“We can confirm that one perpetrator has been arrested. We cannot provide any information as to whether there were other perpetrators as an investigation is still underway,” he said.
Local authorities issued a statement urging citizens to stay indoors and avoid Mannheim city centre due to ongoing police operations.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack. The suspect’s identity and motivation were not immediately clear. Police said they would provide more details throughout the day once information becomes available.
Social media videos appear to show people blurring the views of at least one person injured on the floor on the court following the alleged attack.
Preliminary reports suggest that at least one person was killed in the car’s charge.
