BEIJING – China’s top political advisory body held its annual session in Beijing on Tuesday.
President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders attended the opening meeting of the third session of the 14th National Committee (CPPCC) at the conference.
To some 2,000 representatives, the chairman of the CPPCC National Committee submitted a work report on behalf of the Standing Body Committee.
“We need to improve the CPPCC consultation system and mechanisms, as well as the mechanisms for adopting, implementing and providing feedback on the outcome of the consultation,” Wang Huning said.
He said, “We need to expand coverage of channels and platforms to strengthen unity and friendship, and strengthen implementation of measures in consulting surveillance, and fully play in unique roles across different sectors.
Wang said that China’s major economic and social development goals have been achieved and major advances have been made in the promotion of modernization of the country.
Members of the 14th CPPCC National Committee also participated in group interviews ahead of the annual event’s opening meeting.
The CPPCC functions as a platform for engaging in political frameworks by integrating diverse political parties, independent and prominent figures, people’s organizations, and representatives of various ethnic groups and sectors within society.
This initiative is an important tool for multi-party collaboration and political dialogue under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.
China’s top parliament, the National People’s Parliament (NPC), will also hold its annual session on Wednesday.
Annual meetings are called two sessions.
The two sessions in 2025 attracted global attention amid the US trade war with China.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump gave the green light to collect an extra 10% of Chinese goods. That means a cumulative tariff of 20%, in response to China’s suspicion of inaction over stopping the flow of drugs used to make fentanyl.
China has rejected such US allegations as unfounded. According to Xinhua Island, China has implemented “detailed” cooperation with related countries, including the United States, in addressing the issues of fentanyl-related substances and their precursors.
China also covers many American agricultural products and foods, increasing 10-15% to increase in new US tariffs and import duties.
The US remains vulnerable to China, which targets agricultural exports.
China remains the largest market for US agricultural products. Asian countries brought in nearly $30 billion in such American products in 2024.
For now, Beijing is focusing on Washington’s Achilles heels. It is up to the White House to decide whether they want to resolve trade issues with China through consultations or whether they want to move economic issues to the American masses.
