Remember the Iranian wisdom of Saudi Arabia and the government on diplomatic reconciliation. Discuss the recent achievements and expectations for the coming year.
Almost 18 months later, since I started working in Riyadh, the settlement that took place between Saudi Arabia and Iran in 2023 was an important diplomatic milestone in the Middle East. The agreement reopened the embassies and revived bilateral relations in several areas, including political, economic, cultural and consuls. The two countries are working to advance regional sectors, particularly trade and economic ties opportunities. These are extremely important to both countries. We also look forward to strengthening relationships on issues of interest in the region. The Islamic Republic of Iran places great importance on its neighbors and adopts the policy of good neighbours as its fundamental principle. Iran’s Foreign Minister Dr Abbas Aragut stressed that the new Iranian regime’s policy is to further strengthen relations with its neighbours, and that Saudi Arabia occupies a special place in this framework.
Trade is considered a powerful pillar of modern diplomacy. What are the main product of demand in trade between the two countries? Also, which areas can we investigate further?
Iran could have a good chance of exporting petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and metals, creating good opportunities for economic and trade cooperation with Saudi Arabia. Both sides can benefit from each other’s technical and engineering expertise in order to increase their share of technology in the economic sector. Iran and Saudi Arabia provide the services they need in the agricultural sector, allowing Iranian exporters to increase their presence in the general food, agriculture and trade markets. Construction, renewable energy, tourism, technology and innovation supplies can form new foundations for economic cooperation and make the regional production chain more complete. Land, air and sea corridors are some of the advantages that both countries and regions can benefit from. He is the Minister of Economic and Finance of the Islamic Republic of Iran and recently met his counterpart in Saudi Arabia. There, both sides discussed economic cooperation and its future aspects.
Iran has a very skilled workforce and has many talented IT specialists. In what areas do you see the contributions of Iranian experts in supporting Vision 2030?
Iranian experts have built a strong foundation in a variety of areas and can complement Saudi Arabia’s efforts on technological advancement and sustainability, as outlined in Vision 2030. Iranian technical experts, especially those in the fields of artificial intelligence, software development and cybersecurity, could help them achieve the digital transformation goals of Vision 2030. Iran also has a strong foundation for science and technology, and experts in fields such as nanotechnology and biotechnology could contribute to Saudi Arabia’s R&D department. Iranian experts also have good experience in using artificial intelligence in healthcare, medical research and innovation.
Saudi Arabia and Iran are considered the centers of civilization that attract thousands of tourists. Still, what makes Saudi Arabia an attractive destination for Iranians?
Both countries can become local tourist destinations. Tens of thousands of Arab citizens from the region are currently traveling to Iran and visiting Iranian cities in northern Iran. Iran also has a vast desert that attracts visitors from anywhere. It is also a great place for religious, medical and historical tourism. Unfortunately, we have lost Saudi people in the last decade. And now we can achieve this important cultural work that strengthens relationships between the two countries and people. Meanwhile, Iranian tourists are limited to Hajj and Umrah, but thousands of Iranians can visit Riyadh and the Alula, historic and tourist destinations, the resort of the Red Sea. This will help strengthen relations between the two countries. When both countries meet, they are known for their hospitality, kindness and generosity, leading to understanding and peace.
