Marking one of the most sacred days of the ancient Zoroastrian calendar, Nowruz is an annual event celebrating the shared heritage of the Silk Road, its traditions and culture associated with the birth of spring. Over time, Nowruz developed development and expansion, incorporating new social, religious and cultural influences. Nowruz traditions and customs vary from country to country, but there are many unified features. For example, in most areas, people perform ritual dances, such as jumping over fires and streams, before a festival, and many households also refill their water supply on the last Wednesday of the year.
In particular, in relation to the 2003 Convention for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Nowruz was engraved as an element in 2009 and expanded in 2016 to a representative list of intangible cultural heritage. Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan. In 2010, “Nowruz International Day” was declared by the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution welcomes the efforts of Member States that have been praised for maintaining and developing the culture and traditions associated with Knowles, and encourages Member States to raise awareness about Knowles and make efforts to hold annual events in commemoration of the celebration.
In December 2024, Iran’s Minister of Tourism Reza Salehi Amiri said that the global registration of Knowles had transformed its cultural scope from the national and regional level, both in Iran and its neighboring countries, to a global position that serves a sustainable foundation for laying a sustainable foundation for strengthening peace and stability in today’s world. He also emphasized that Nowruz will unite the shared culture of Iranian peoples within the country and nurture national unity. At the regional level, it links the intangible heritage of 13 countries across the Asian continent.
Salehi-Amiri added that Nowruz is a key component of Iran’s cultural capabilities, rooted in nature and shaped by a system of belief and calendar calculations. Over time, it evolved into a cultural identity and heritage. Therefore, Nowruz symbolizes the creation of the world, including the earth, the sky, water, plants, animals, humans, and more. It means renewing life, as the creative energy of spring activates human cultural and social systems. ”
