The US military has signed a contract with Scale AI to provide artificial intelligence. This has been used by AI agents for planning and operation, as far as they play the most prominent role in the Western defense sector to date.
The value of the contract awarded as part of the US Defense Innovation Unit’s Thunderforge project is not specified, but given its considerable scope, it could be a big one. According to today’s data labeling and AI training outfit scale, the deal will allow teams, including Palmer Lucky’s Andrill and Capolit to carry out the US Department of Defense’s “first foray into integrating military work and AI agents in between.”
Transforming military decision-making with AI is crucial to maintaining US military control, according to Bryce Goodman, leader of DIU’s Thunderforge project.
“Today’s military planning process relies on decades-old technology and methodology, creating a fundamental discrepancy between modern warfare speed and ability to respond,” Goodman said. “Thunderforge brings AI-powered analytics and automation to operations and strategic planning, enabling decision-makers to operate at the pace they need for new conflicts.”
According to DIU, the ultimate goal of the project is to help military decision makers pass on the details more quickly and make decisions based on AI proposals. Thunderforge AI is used to support mission planning and campaign development, assist in resource allocation at the theatre level, and to conduct strategic assessments. We are given a strong impression that humans make every final decision, although we are guided by software.
AI agents – bot flashy words – can simulate leader outcomes, plan scenarios, and run tabletop war games to improve proposed courses of action,” DIU said.
