The port city in northwest Tartus and the entire state of Homs were placed under a curfew Thursday night.
The curfew was announced in Latakia until 10am local time on Friday.
The curfew followed massive protests by Alawis and Shia Muslims who condemned the administration’s violent actions.
Syria’s Supreme Alawite Islamic Council issued a statement condemning the regime’s increasing violence, including air bombardment of private homes and forced expulsion of residents, Presstv reported.
The statement urged Syrians to sit in peacefully, refraining from damaging their property or engaging in sectarian conflicts.
The statement stemming from former Syrian regime officer, Geas Suleiman Dara, is circulating on social media.
The statement announced the creation and launch of the “Military Council for the Liberation of Syria.”
This follows a coordinated attack on the regime forces in Latakia, resulting in the deaths of more than 10 security personnel.
