The US has sought to block Iranian bids to the council by putting pressure on its members.
The Executive Council consists of 41 OPCW Member States elected by the National Council and halt every two years.
The Council is responsible for overseeing the activities of the Technical Secretariat and promoting effective implementation and compliance with the Convention.
To ensure the effectiveness of the Executive Council, the treaty requires that membership numbers be structured appropriately to the principles of fair geographical distribution, importance of the chemical industry, and political and security interests.
