Tehran – Senior Iranian and Russia diplomats convened in Moscow this week to highlight the deepening of strategic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in order to deal with the Syrian and Palestinian crises.
On Thursday, Iranian ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, met Mikhail Bogdanov, the deputy Russian foreign minister for Middle East and Middle East (West Asia) and Africa.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the debate spanned a wide range of regional and international issues focusing on Syria and Palestine.
Both sides emphasized the “need for continuous contact and dialogue” to address the challenges of West Asia, and emphasized diplomacy as a tool to preempt and manage international crises.
Jalali also met with Sergei Lyabukov, vice minister of BRICS cooperation in Russia, America, to discuss multilateralism and compliance with the UN Charter principles.
Both diplomats emphasized the importance of “diplomacy as the basis for bilateral and multilateral collaboration,” particularly preventing volatile trends and tackling the ongoing global crisis.
In early February, Mohammadreza Rauv Sheibani, the Iranian envoy on the Syrian issue, spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin (West Asia) and African envoys Mikhail Lavrentiev and Bogdanov.
They reaffirmed “an unwavering commitment to Syria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity” and advocated a comprehensive Syrian-led dialogue to resolve internal conflicts.
The joint statement said: “Internal issues in Syria must be resolved by the Syrian Party through comprehensive consultations, including all political, ethnic and religious groups.”
Part of a broader effort to coordinate the geopolitical agenda of Tehran and Moscow, the conference comes amid frequent high-level exchanges with 20 years of strategic contracts signed in 2024.
