“It is very saddened that the US administration has decided to target innocent people in Iraq, especially before this hot month, by attempting to deprive them of access to basic services such as electricity,” the Iranian head wrote in the X-Post.
“We are continuing to stand up to Iraqi people and stick to our commitment to the Iraqi government, which will be involved in repelling illegal US actions,” Araguchi added.
Araghchi’s remarks came after the US announced it had revoked its exemption from Iraq’s sanctions and that Iraq could now import electricity from its eastern neighbors.
In response, the chairman of the Iraqi Parliament’s finance committee warned that a move by Washington to limit electricity imports from Iran would destroy Iraq’s electrical grid.
James Hewitt, a spokesman for the US National Security Council, said on Sunday that the decision to expiry Iraq’s exemption is consistent with the so-called National Security President’s Memorandum 2, which seeks to bring Iran’s oil exports down to zero.
A spokesperson argued that Washington would not allow Tehran to provide the extent of economic or financial relief.
