TEHRAN – A total of 507 earthquakes have been recorded nationwide in the past calendar months ended April 20th, with 13.7% of earthquakes recorded compared to 588 earthquakes recorded in the last Iranian calendar months (February 19 to March 20th), according to the seismological network of Tehran University.
Of the total, one sized between 5 and 6 on the Richter scale, occurring on March 24th in Carman.
Statistically, there are 447 earthquakes with a size less than 3. A 52 earthquake, size between 3 and 4. Seven earthquakes ranging from 4 to 5 sizes have occurred in the country.
Among the states of the country, 87 Khamans, 59 Khorasan Razavi, 42 Yazd and 34 Semnans recorded the most earthquakes in the country.
According to the Earthquake Network of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran, a total of 6,272 earthquakes have been recorded nationwide in past calendar years (March 2024 – March 2025).
From the registered earthquakes, 150 were over four on the Richter scale. At least five earthquakes of 4.5 or more have occurred monthly in the country.
The Iranian plateau is located in a highly seismically active region of the world and is known not only for its major catastrophic earthquakes, but also for its natural disasters, particularly earthquake-related disasters.
Iran has about 2% of global earthquakes, but more than 6% of global earthquake casualties in the 20th century have been reported from Iranian earthquakes.
